A New Year on the Bike
Welcome to 2009 and a whole new year to fulfil your new years resolutions. Whether your interest is completely competitive, move up a grade, win a race, conquer a climb, set a personal best, win the sprint to the bus stop, be the first to the coffee shop or just to start riding (again). Make this year your year and enjoy what millions of other Australians do, day after day, week after week......... just get out there and ride.
2008 was a very big year for cycling, not only for Townsville, but for Australia. Evans second place in the Tour (again), O’Grady almost taking out Roubaix for a second time, Rodgers return to form and hopefully fulfilling the dream that every Aussie cyclist hoped for when he took off with Rasmussen on that stage. And who could forget the day the Pro’s came to Townsville. The boys put on an awesome show as they raced around our ‘picture postcard’ Strand circuit with a few locals thrown in for good measure. For everyone lucky enough to see them perform on a different stage at the gala dinner, it was a chance to see these ‘gods of cycling’ in a more relaxed environment.
Locally we had the ever green Ruth Corset carving up the Australian road scene and also taking it to the world stage, competing with New Zealand based Team Jazz Apple and also representing Australia in the green and gold. This year should be just as exciting if her second place in the National Championships is anything to go by. Chris Klem and Joel Lewis also had a stint on the international scene with Team Myogenisis in the US.
Our juniors have had an eventful year with Jacob Restall scoring a place in the State Track Team and bringing home a bronze medal. Hayley Grant earned one of Townsville’s highest accolades with the Townsville Bulletin Sports Awards after her impressive performance at the Youth Olympics. Amy Cundy, Georgina Kanowski and Mat Ross won Queensland cyclists of the year and 2009 is shaping up to be even bigger for our little pocket rockets. Most of them have stepped up an age group and are keen to make their mark as state selection is firmly in their sights.
Townsville has seen a huge surge in recreational numbers and social groups are forming all over town. One of the more popular groups is the Cylochinos and have been heavily involved in keeping several coffee shops profitable, even enticing Juliettes to purchase purpose built bike racks. Expect to see them popping up at pretty much every cycling event in the universe, cheering on the hopefuls and flying the Townsville / Australian flag.
On a darker note, the never ending battle of cyclist V motorist seems to be constantly in the headlines. Although it seems to be getting better, we should never be complacent and always be aware that we, as cyclists, not only have the right to be on the road but we also have the responsibility to obey the road rules. If we demand the respect of other road users, we need to show respect and not flaunt the law.
So stick to that resolution and keep that promise. Get the wind in your hair (through your helmet), make some knew friends and enjoy the lifestyle that cycling brings to many people every day. Stay safe, ride smart and we’ll see you on the road.
