TOWNSVILLE will be bustling with cyclists from all over the State this weekend for the Suncorp North Queensland Games.
Avid cycling fans will be well catered for as every discipline is covered – track to road, BMX and mountain biking. Riders aged from five to 75 will be fighting it out for the prestigious gold, silver and bronze medals. Townsville Cycle Club will be hosting the track racing on Friday night at the club Velodrome. This will be the final track event for the year, so a hot night of racing is expected.
Saturday morning will see over 120 riders line up for the time trial to be held at the top of Herveys Range.
Townsville's time trial king Tony Zanchetta will be testing his form leading up to the national masters road race championships in Sydney the following weekend. He will be facing some tough competition from a very large elite field to take the overall honours.
Saturday sees the riders back at Herveys Range for the road event.
For some, this will include a cruelling 4km climb which is sure to split the fields as the stronger riders power away and leave the rest to chase.
The climb comes early so the ones left behind have the opportunity to regroup and try to chase down the leaders. A strong field of juniors will also be competing, including two members of the Queensland junior track team – Townsville's Jacob Restall and Atherton's David Edwards – who recently competed at the national championships.
Both are favourites to take out their respective age categories.
Sunday morning will see the final race of the Games and has the riders lining up on The Strand for the criterium event. The huge fields have to negotiate the tight and technical hotdog course which runs around the back of Strand Park. With the added incentive of prizemoney on offer, as well as the medals, there will be some fast and furious racing. The day kicks off with the juniors and ends with the high-speed elite men.
